Hudson was born in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Academy Award winning actress Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson, an actor, comedian, and musician.Her parents divorced when she was just 18 months older and she, along with her brother, actor Oliver Hudson, were raised in Snowmass, Colorado, and Pacific Palisades, California by her mother and her mother's longtime partner, actor Kurt Russell.Hudson's family heritage is Italian (from her maternal grandmother), Hungarian Jewish (from her maternal grandmother),and the remainder a mix of English and a little German.She was raised Jewish as was her mother she is also a practicing Buddhism.Hudson has stated that her biological father "doesn't know me through a hole in the wall", and she considers Russell her father.Hudson has described her mother as "the one I've gained the most knowledge from, and whom I look up to, who has conducted her life in a way that I can admire". Her family includes four brothers and sisters: Zachary Hudson and Emily Hudson, her father's biological second marriage to actress Cindy Williams; Lalania Hudson and Wyatt Russell, her mother's relationship with Wyatt Russell, her mother's. She was accepted into New York University, but she decided to pursue a career in acting instead of pursuing an undergraduate degree.
