Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father left her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder caused by word associations as a young child. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teens, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one week she decided it wasn't for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on the fourth time she applied she was accepted. One of her classmates included Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. However, Tate soon began to garner notice for her stand-up comedy that she incorporated into her resume in the year 1996.
